Free Online Piano Lessons

Hi, my name is Graham Howard and I'm the editor of ukpianos.co.uk.

 Most Popular Question

Hi Graham!

thank you for teaching me your wonderful lessons. You know that recently i started learning but my unfortunate thing is i'm not practicing regularly. Like one day i'm sitting for hours and for some days not even a touch - give me a solution.

Hi Bobby

The best thing is to practice little and often. Don't try to do
too much in one go.

It is better to practice 15 minutes a day rather than 1 or 2 hours every now and again.

I suggest writing down a practice plan and sticking to it. Let me know how you get on.

Regards, Graham Howard.

       Learn piano for free
"Do you want to learn
to play piano for free?"

You can get my free piano lessons here.

I assume you've landed on this page because you want free online piano lessons. Many of the UK Pianos visitors are eager to learn piano but don't know where to start. My aim is to guide you in the right direction.

You may have considered private piano lessons, or you may have been told you should sign up for a course of piano lessons in your local music school. I can tell you that you don't need to do any of these initially.

My recommendation is to start off with a free online piano course just to get going (I'll show you which one to get a bit later) and then when you have learnt a few of the basics - in your own time - you will be ready to either tackle a complete online piano lesson course, hire a private teacher, or join a music school.

Most free online lessons that I've seen don't give you enough information, and the order in which they're laid out can be very confusing. I've read a lot of them and, unfortunately, can't actually recommend ANY of them to you.

What to do?

I was disappointed with this, so I decided to write my own online piano lessons to offer the UK Pianos visitors free of charge.

What Our Customers Have To Say...

"I definitely look forward to any future materials"

"My piano playing is progressing well. I liked your free piano lessons and covered most of the areas one would expect in a free course. I definitely look forward to any future materials you may have.

Thanks for everything"

"Your course took me back to basics. It was quite refreshing and very helpful"

Hello Graham. I am actually already enrolled on a very "serious" piano course with a piano tutor and I find it quite difficult. To be fair, I am only in the early stages. Your course took me back to basics and I found it quite refreshing and very helpful, as it has more of the "building blocks", so to speak.

Thank you! Gerald Webb, Doncaster, UK

"Your lessons stressed the"daily practice" which is the reminding I need to bring old techniques back"

I liked the course as a good review and reorganization.  In my youth I took lessons and achieved Grade 8 conservatory as a teenager.
Your lessons stressed the"daily practice" which is the reminding I need to bring old techniques back.
I'm anxiously waiting your next email for "memorizing" and 'improved sight reading"
Thanks for getting me going again!

Sincerely, Jane

"Any more tips like this would be much welcome"

Graham

"Thank you for this tip. I have been attending piano classes and I told my teacher that I want to learn chords and then do some sight reading but he want me to do more sight reading which i find boring and not very helpful in learning to play in my church band.

Any more tips like this would be much welcome."

Thanks, Alfred

"The methodology & your approach was really outstanding Useful"

Hi Graham Howard,

Thanks a bunch for the Piano Lessons...I am basically a guitarist (who had a life time ambition of learning the piano ).

I think the material was fantastic, The methodology & your approach was really outstanding Useful ....& must say it has got it's nobility(with a purpose of educating any body who has got genuine interest only!....) &  it's a thankless job.

With Cudos &  warm regards

Hi Graham,

I just wanted to thank you for your correspondence, which I read with interest.
My husband brought me my first digital piano for Christmas and I have been having lessons since January. My only regret is that I haven't learn the piano sooner. I really enjoy playing and am now working towards grade one, which I will hopefully be attempting in the spring. I will keep you updated.

"Every word you send is so precious"

"Graham, Thank you so much, every word you send is so precious, unfortunately I have been using a public piono and there is always so many people who want to learn.
Yesterday I visited a dealer in used pionos and cheapest was at an equivalent of 1600 dollars. which I could not afford. I have printed the notes you have sent tommorrow morning I want to be the first in the piono room and use an hour. I pray one day I get my own piono. Of recently I was at a party and the pionist entertained us with wonderful pieces that even now the my ear hear the string fading sweetly.

It sounds chords are easier to learn.

I thank God that I found you, and by the way. I just over saw some one on a computer next to me printing your note then I got the little word Uk on line piono lessons then I put it in the search engine and now I have you. It was by Divine providence.

Have a good time"

"Since receiving your emails I have transitioned from a keyboard player to a piano player"

Hi Graham

Thank you for your free piano course. Since receiving your emails I have transitioned from a keyboard player to a piano player. I have also ensured that I practice every day and have seen immediate improvements. Whenever I don't feel like playing, I remember your advice that
practicing often rather than once a week is the best way to learn!

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and thanks again for referring me to the Rocket Piano Course - it truly is a gem!!

Cheers

"I will put in some practice when I get some free time in between working and sorting out children"

Hi Graham,

Thanks you very much for the free lessons, I have printed them off and read them all, although I haven't really had the time to put all of it into practice.

I recently purchased a 61 key Casio CTK-720 keyboard (all that I could afford) and I also purchased a Classenti keyboard bag from the UK Piano's website, it arrived the day after I ordered, excellent service.

I will put in some practice when I get some free time in between working and sorting out children as I would love to be able to play the piano and be able to read music.

Many thanks for all of your help. I look forward to receiving the report that you mentioned.

Kind Regards

Marion

"All six lessons contain advice I never had from any teacher"

Dear Graham

"Thank you for your free course, it puts everything in perspective especially the section on posture, as I have just had a spine op mainly through wear and tear and the advise I have had about sitting from physiotherapists and specialist books blend exactly with yours,
all six lessons contain advice I never had from any teacher."

"I really appreciate your willingness to assist me in learning to play the piano effectively"

Hi Graham:

"Your piano course is one of the best that I have ever had! The explanations are easy and straight forward. However, there is one confession to make. I have not been practicing everyday due to work constraints. Luckily, I am at home today, so I can try to catch up
on some of the lessons.

At this moment, I really cannot tell you any problems I am presently having, nor any other thing that I would like to learn, because of my inconsistency in practicing. However, I will send you an email as soon
as the need arises.

I really appreciate your willingness to assist me in learning to play the piano effectively, and I thank you ever so much for the additional lessons that you are considering to send. Thanks again!"

"I thought you made some very good points"

Hi Graham,

I enjoyed reading your free piano course. I doubt if I will ever be a
pianist ( wife and mother-in-law are both pianists ). I am a bit of a lost
cause. Though I like to play with musical programs like Sibelius , Fruity
loops etc.

I thought you made some very good points, but I have not in all honesty
followed your course through. I will try to go over it more thoroughly and send you some feedback.

I think you have a great idea. Keep it up.

If I have any initial comments, you could try to make the course more
visually stimulating with the use of graphics, perhaps in the form of html
format e-mails ( visual presentation plays a big part in my buisness and I
think it would help you ). Perhaps a more interactive web site might help.

My wife has a piano, and I have a midi keyboard which is linked to my
computer. Keyboard is largely unused. Wife and mother in law both hate
keyboards. Tried to convince wife to get Yamaha CVP-409

Very cool piece of kit to non musical muppet like myself, but mega
expensive.

I look forward to reading your next e-mail but can't promise to subscribe to anything.

Kind regards,

Roger.

"I'd certainly appreciate if you can teach me reading notes"

"Hello Graham,

How are you doing?

Your piano lessons were certainly helpful.

Though I've been playing Casio for long now you have shown me the correct way of practising it. Though I don't get much time to practise it I do put in my effort to keep in touch.

I'd certainly appreciate if you can teach me reading notes.

I would like you to know that I don't want to be a professional..I play this instrument as a hobby and so trying to enhance my skills.

Once again thank you for your lessons."

Regards, Shakti

Dear sir,

"Piano lesson from you was awesome.Good.It was my dream to play piano from very young.I went piano class when i was 10 but only for a year. Then i could not cope up with both studies and piano lesson therefore i stopped and now i want to learn by myself.Sir,each and every part of your lesson was understandable and is clear enough for anyone else to learn.

Since i don't have a piano at home,i don't practice everyday. In a week roughly twice i'll go to my neighbour's house and learn.
Last but not least i would like to thank sir for the free piano course.I've got a lot of input from it and would really love to learn more. Thanks a bunch sir."

"at my age 76 I find the sight reading awkward"

Hi Graham

thank you for mails,  at my age 76 I find the sight reading awkward, having to read  both base and treble together and then getting your hands to respond together.
I only started last year, but am slowly  begining to get it.  Little bits of info and tips like from you helps a lot.

Many thanks
Alan cw

i am practising daily though, following kids books and the teach
yourself course, and absolutely loving it. i guess i need to focus on sight
reading most of all, i get timing ok, know my fingers fairly ok, but tend to
work out the music rather than read it afresh...... determined to get better though!

thanks, ali

Many thanks for your prompt response and very interesting short course on the piano.
I haven't actually got a piano yet so the value of your course is somewhat limited for the present but I hope to have one soon.

"Looking forward to hearing from you again"

hi Graham, thanks very much for your piano lessons and look forward to some more, they were very very helpfull.

I am practicing two hours or more every day. I live a couple of doors away from Audrey,s pianos in Highcliffe here, and is teaching me how to read music. I am also doing a course with Jermaine Griggs at Hear and play.

I bought my piano six weeks ago brand new from a company in preston, its a Casio Celviano Ap 80r digital. Ive never played before, but I shall give it my best shot. I can now play quite a few different songs. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

kind  regards     Dave. dawson.

"I'm sure it will come with time and lots more practice"

"Hello Graham

I have found your courses extremely useful.  I am a complete beginner and have started off with your lessons and also a private tutor.  I am pleased with my progress so far and keen to learn more.

Area to be improved, recognising the notes on the page and equating that to the relevant finger - I'm sure it will come with time and lots more practice.

Would be interested in any further information."

Kind regards,
Teresa

"I have enjoyed reading your lessons and going through them, it made me realise that I am not too old to learn"

Good afternoon Graham.

"Many thanks for the free courses, I do have some of the basics already as I have muddled my way through playing keyboard for a while, but felt now was the time to further challenge my left hand as previously I only played chords and let my super Tyros do the rest. I have now traded my Tyros in for a Yamaha CVP 309 which is a fantastic instrument as well as a very nice piece of furniture.

I did the same as you, I trawled through a long list of elearning courses and I have already signed up to
Rocket Piano.

I am currently working my way through the beginners book which I have to say is challenging as previously I did not read the bass line music and at the same time put the right fingers on the right keys, but I am sure I will get there eventually, unfortunately I do get a bit compulsive and it takes over everything else that I do, but I am enjoying it although I am not the most patient person.

I have enjoyed reading your lessons and going through them, it made me realise that I am not too old to learn, but do wish I had done it in my early years but it was not meant to be.

Anyway thanks for the info, I will let you know periodically how I am getting on......"

best regards
Kath

"Thank you for giving me the push that I needed"

Dear Mr. Howard,

"In reply to your e-mail 12/4/08, I thought the on-line introduction to the piano was extremely helpful and has prompted me to book piano lessons with a private teacher. I have just completed my first lesson and the  music teacher was very impressed with my knowledge of the keyboard and sight-reading skills, seeing as I had presented myself as a novice.

Thank you once again for giving me the push that I needed."

Sincerely, Ms. Catherine Quigley

Dear Graham

Thanks for your useful tips. I had piano lessons when I was young but the
music I was given wasn't inspiring and your advice about learning chords
and using these was very encouraging. I don't always get much time to
practise but I feel inspired to go back to the piano.

Thanks again

Hi Graham.

Thanks for your emails.  At the moment I am only able to tinker around on a piano at work and am saving to buy a digital one for home use.  Your course has been clear and helpful on the basics.  I look forward to receiving the report as I hope to be able to afford my own piano in April.

"So far, I have found your tips very useful and helpful"

Dear Graham,

Sorry for my delay in replying your message.  I must confess I am so impressed about your interest in my knowing how to play the piano.  I have already started the earlier lessons, but I have not particularly had time to practice the last lesson.  My desire is to ultimately play like a real professional but like I told you, I have been involved in conducting as well as computation of exam results in my school of late.

I am certain I would be through this week and will definitely practice the last lesson.  I will sure let you know how I fared, my impressions, and what I would still like you to teach me by next week.  So far, I have found your tips very useful and helpful.

Once again, thank you very much and remain blessed.

Sincerely yours,

Kennedy.

"I am eager to go through every lesson just to be able to play the piano like a real professional"

Dear Howard,

Thank you very much for your piano lessons.

Unfortunately, I have been so busy in the school where I teach as we prepare for the first term exams before the christmas break.  However, I have been able to go through the first lesson today and I am happy to tell you that I have gained quite a lot as regards avoiding bad habits and knowning the right techniques.  I have also known the finger numbers.

I will be getting you informed as I make progress in the lessons.  I am eager to go through every lesson just to be able to play the piano like a real professional to the Glory of God in the church where I worship.

Once again, thank you and remain blessed.

Sincerely yours,

Kennedy

When i said your free lessons were a bit basic ,when i think about it if after two years music lessons and im still looking for piano courses then perhaps I do need to start at the basics. Didn’t mean to sound as if i was knocking you. It is a shame you dont do a course for purchasing yourself."

"I am a 70 year old pensioner just starting out. Your piano lesson "Does age matter when learning piano" certainly fits me a treat!"

"Hi Graham. Just to say thank you for the five part mini course which I have found most helpful.

I am a 70 year old pensioner just starting out with the piano for the very first time, so your earlier comment in part two "Does age matter when learning piano" certainly fits me a treat !!!

I have only just taken delivery of my Yamaha keyboard and once I have a chance to go thru some exercises etc. I should be in a better position to feel which ongoing course would suit me best. After all, now in retirement, I have plenty of time in which to fit my new project.

I have added your Rocket piano link to my favourites. Thank you again for your kind assistance."

"your piano lessons will help me to continue playing beautiful music"

Hi Graham.

because I am a self employed gardener I haven't had the time but, I have had a few piano lessons quite a few years ago so I do know the hand position and can read music a little.

I also have the Yamaha PSR350 keyboard which has the Yamaha education suit 2 on it which teaches a person had to play the correct notes on the keyboard and also I can accompany the backgorund orchestra two.  So I do play onmy keyboard sometimes.

I have always wanted to play beautifull classical music on either a keyboard so your piano lessons will help me to continue playing music like that.

Many thanks.

Yours truly.

Christopher.

"Thanks for the emailed lessons they were a great help in my starting out"

Hello Graham

"I`m a "mature" student just starting out again after ** years since my last attempt at learning to play, I have in fact signed up for the Rocket Piano online course and am now looking for a local piano tutor to help with the basics of posture, hand position etc.

I`ll need all the help I can get!!

It helps to speak with other students to realise we all find it hard going and very frustrating at times and is a relief in a way to understand good musicians are rarely born, it really is practice, practice and then practice some more."

Thanks again

Pete

PS I have just become the proud owner of a fantastic
Clavinova so I had better learn this time around...

"I commend you on your generosity for sharing your talent with us"

Hi Mr Howard,

...slowly but surely! I have 2 jobs so it's sometimes difficult to find the time to practise, but the lessons & the approach are both fine; I already know the letters of the octave! I'm using a 5 octave Yamaha keyboard (really basic) but I think it's more than sufficient for me, however I would welcome any suggestions you may have.

I know, in time I shall make greater progress by trying to incorporate them into my daily routine; it's just a case of better 'time-management' on my part! :-(

Mr Howard, I appreciate this email & I commend you on your generosity for sharing your talent with us. So far, I have found the lessons to be 'user-friendly' & easy to follow & I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours 'begginingly'

"Due to your recommendations I purchased Ashley Southam's piano course"

Hi Graham

"Although I love listening to music I don't have any musical skills but really would like to learn to play, just for my own enjoyment, even though I'm an old codger. I found your free course whetted my appetite - so much so, that I went out and purchased Ashley Southam's piano course.

Hopefully I will be able to devote enough time to it. Nearly
all of my skills have been self taught so I'm sure with your free course and
Ashley Southam's course I might hopefully achieve a smattering in this field."

Many thanks

Dear Graham,

Thanks a lot for the first lesson. Even though I played piano for 3 years, I am very rusty and would like to revise the basics, that's why I am doing your course. I appreciate that you are doing this for free, and hope you won't mind me asking you some questions along the line. I am eagerly waiting for the second lesson.

"The basic lessons of part 1,2,5 are more relevant"

Thanks for sending me the free piano course. As I am the absolute beginner in playing any music instrument so I have found certain lesson is more appropriate than the others. For example part 3, 4 are too advance and abstract, they do not help me at all.
The basic lessons of part 1,2,5 are more relevant. If there is any means too include the pictures in the lesson then it will be even better.

We get into the piano thing because our kids start to take piano lesson and we would like to understand about the instrument too. Since we are living in France so over here the music notes are called as do re mi fa ....rather than C D E F ...hence extra confusion.

We have looked into some beginner piano books and find that for the SOL frame, the way to remember the notes written on the lines as E(at) G(ood)B(read) D(ear) F(ather) and the notes between the lines are F A C E (face)

By the way I try to spend ~10 min each day to practice

Best regards,
Minh

"I must say, your method does clarify the daunting task of approaching the keyboard!"

I did find your information useful. I have just started to play the piano really to extend my musical knowledge and repertoire. I'm actually a clarinettist - but wanted to understand more about chords/chord progression etc. and als to add another instrument.

I must say, your method does clarify the daunting task of approaching the keyboard! However, my clarinet teacher - who is a long and good friend of mine - is a fantastic pianist and another very close friend of mine is a piano teacher -so I have lots of support! But your material was still of use and I recommend it!

Dear Mr. Howard,
I liked my free piano lessons and I am, in fact practicing almost every day.

Your lessons helped to serve as a reminder to sit down and play.

Yours, Anna

"Hiya Graham,
I am just writing to thank you. I have a keyboard as I live in what you call a condo so uprights cannot be brought here, and I have all the basic books on piano. Thankyou for sending the mails."

"I found your course valuable but I must push on now"

"Thank you for your email. I certainly am practicing every day and am trying to build on the information that you so kindly supplied in your free introductory course.

I am a complete beginner and so it is a hard slog every day but I know that I am making progress. I am trying to master chords at the moment and my left hand won't do what I want it to do and when.

I am comforting myself with the knowledge that I learned how to touch type so I should be able to play the piano too if I stick at it. I did find your course valuable but I must push on now so I am reading everything that I can to help me progress. Thanks once again."

Yours painstakingly, Mike

thanks a lot for these wonderful report and tips you sent me, i am pretty sure these things will help me a lot to improve my piano lessons. i just bought a kawai digital pian CA5 model
replacing my Yamaha keyboard (but I still have it in case I travel I can use it). The Kawai is a wooden key made and sounds pretty good and I am sure I will be a good pianist for

Dear Mr Howard,
"Further to your email.
It is progressing and the course is very very useful to start off with.
I repeat it again and again.
I guess some visuals or graphics of the keyboard may further help but

Some info on chords would be useful or did I miss that !
I will go through it again.
Look forward to your next email."

"Thanks to your free piano course my motivation is gaining pace"

Hi Graham

In reply, I am pleased to tell you that I am well impressed with the
material that has been sent. I believe my next statement answers your
question in the most positive way for you. I have signed up for your full
beginners course and have commenced downloading the files.

I have an upright Welma Piano that has been collecting dust for a few years (kept for sentimental reasons) and having read your article about age (I am 68) decided that it was not to late for me to get some confidence moving and have a go.

Thanks to your free piano course my motivation is gaining pace, I am practicing every day, at present (we do go away on short breaks with our caravan a great deal so I will take the course work with me to read) the piano is being re-tuned next week so I am really pleased.

Thank you

Brian

Thanks for the brief piano course.
Having procrastinated for many years, even though I have a number of tutor books, I have realised the only way to commitment is to book up some piano lessons.

"I welcome as much free advice as you like to offer."

Hi Graham,

"I found that your piano course was easy to understand and the basics of understanding music and how it is structured is also very useful but perhaps I am not realy the best person to comment on the course you see I am 72 years of age and for about the last 10 years I have struggled nay grappled with the Keyboard.

In 2000 I attended an evening course on Keyboard playing and managed to get the level one certificate, the instructor was very good had A STRING OF LETTERS After his name but alas he decided that he had had enough of senile OAPs And did not continue with the course then coupled with that I had a Hip Operation and sadly my keyboard fell into disuse for sometime then when I Started playing again I had to learn all over again.

However, my worst critic was my wife and playing became impossible for some time so the Keyboard again fell in to disuse for some considerable time, Then it was the for some considerable time, Then it was the Yamaha PSR320 but since then sadly my wife passed away recently and strange as it may seem once again I returned to the Keyboard.

But this time a more sophisticated model The PSR 7000 which is somewhat More professional looking and sounding I intend to continue with this Instrument and would welcome as much free advice as you would like to offer.

Currently use three fingered chords and the auto chord feature
But would dearly love to be able to use the full fingered chording System,however- one day perhaps after much more practice."

Regards,
Ronnie Barker.

PS with a name like this I've got to be good at something!

"I am progressing teaching myself piano at my own pace at home"

Hi Graham

Thanks for you latest email. I found it very interesting. I have had
private piano lessons in the past from 3 different teachers and one of them was great and taught me a tremendous amount about theory and practice and I really progressed my piano playing with her.

The other two teachers were not as good and I agree a great deal of self discipline is required to keep up boring practice set my someone else. I have also had group piano lessons at a local college and this was not very successful either. I am progressing teaching myself piano at my own pace at home.

"Your site, free lessons, interest, and advice have helped us both. Thank you"

"I'm 63, totally un-musical, not too bright and muddle along in the throng. I have two young sons, one of whom (aged eight) has been taking weekly keyboard lessons from a local teacher for a couple of years. He is progressing steadily, although not amongst the ranks of the talented. However, having got to grips with the basics, he takes great pleasure in finding, and learning to play simple new tunes.

I had come across your site of course and, offering free lessons, took up your offer. I also recently bought the Rocket Piano Course, for myself, on your advice. I cannot devote the time I would like to the Rocket lessons but fit some in when practical (busy subsistence farmer! Several aspects have been of great benefit, and although I still cannot string a tune together with style, I have a better understanding of my son's learning process and progress.

Your site, free lessons, interest, and advice have helped us both, directly and indirectly. Thank you."

"Your course is good on the basics"

"I thought your course contained good info on the basics. I am taking keyboard lessons at the moment but I always think that reviewing different sources of information is very helpful if not necessary.

I don't think that any individual would get exactly what they need from a single course. Other sources may contain handy hints or sometimes make a concept easier by explaining it in a different way. A good example is the Rocket Piano course which I have downloaded. Normal ear training and sight reading practice can get very laborious but by using the fun software included, it makes it a lot easier.

As I said, your course is good on the basics but it would be handy to include some ways of making the process of learning a little easier. It gets very hard sometimes when it seems that you reach a wall and can't get over it. I'm looking forward to the section on improving sight reading and memory."

Hi Graham

This mail is what i needed as good as a piano lesson thank you
my left wont play ball many times i felt like bashing it with a hammer if it was not for the fact that am allergic to pain
i will play the language of the angels the piano

thank you
Mustapha

Reply/ Hi Mustapha

You are very funny, I like your humour.

Just try to practice more with the left hand.
Do some one handed scales, arpeggios, and
do some sight reading using only the left hand.

After a while of doing this everyday, you should
see some improvement.

Make sure you keep that hammer in a locked draw!

Hi Graham,

I would just like to thank you for all your advice within the course, it has really helped my understanding of the piano and what it is all about.

My music teacher said i would be good at playing the piano but there is no piont in me learning it because i wouldn't grasp it easily because i'm too old, is this true? Because i am only 14 years old and this really pulled my confidence down.

Do i have to pay for this online course?

Well with your help i'm well on my way to learning the piano.

thank you again, i look forward to hearing from you again.

yours pianistically,

Natalie.

Reply/  “You are never too old to learn". This is what I
usually advise if you are retired... But 14
years old???

The advice you've got from your teacher is
absolute nonsense. Many players have become
successful starting later in life.

The fastest and surest way to success is to
practice EVERY DAY.

My course is free, but you need to invest
around £20 for Ruth Searle's Rocket Piano Course.

Rocket Piano will teach you all the basics of
playing piano.

You can read about it here:

Thank you, Graham. What I've read so far has been very useful and greatly
appreciated. I'm working hard on basics and am determined to practise
regularly. I'm new to the piano but have played clarinet for over twenty
years, very rarely missing a day for the practice of scales and studies.

My main puzzle at the moment is how a pianist learns to place the hands in
the correct position for the start of a particular piece of music. On
clarinet one's hands are always in the same position, regardless of the
music, and the position of one's fingers is what varies. On the piano it's
obvious even to a beginner that the hands can't remain in the same position
for different pieces of music! Perhaps there is a simple formula?

Best wishes, Laurence of Mar

Reply/ Hi Laurence

There is no set formula for this.

By learning all the scales and arpegios and
practicing sight-reading every day, you will
(eventually) know which fingers to use at
the start of a piece.

It helps sometimes to look at the notes ahead...
You can then determine which fingers to start
off with.

This will all come naturally to you when you have
got many hours of practice behind you.

Regards,
Graham Howard

Question/ I want your help. I actually don’t have an 88 or 85 key piano, I have a small synthesizer CASIO SA-45, as I am a beginner I bought this. Can I learn all this lesson sent by you on that synthesizer also?

Reply/ Hi Priyanka

The Casio SA-45 is a tiny keyboard but you can still follow my lessons on it. Once you have mastered the basics then I recommend buying something with at least 76 keys -- and preferably weighted.

Hello Graham
You send me regular e mails and usually ask for a response , so I thought
I'd respond to this particular one.

The reason I never bothered with private lessons were simple ....expense .
Up here , I was quoted around £24 per hour, not to mention all the other factors

travel etc .

I knew I would benefit from a structured regime , especially when paying for it,
but I simply could not justify that kind of expense , so declined . .
Let me tell you something of myself . I am a 50 year old man , with little
talent , but a great. passion for music . I have played a Spanish guitar
for many years , and although still not anything special , I am well past
beginner stage .

I had a friend of many years , who sadly died this year .
We both played guitar , and I have many recordings of folk and pop songs we
did . After his death I found myself uninterested in picking up
the instrument . But my passion for music continues . I had always loved
the piano , but never owned one .

I think the piano is a solo instrument ,
and in many ways is the king of instruments , as it can play almost
anything , whether solo or an accompaniment. With my friend dead , I
gravitated towards a piano , as I felt my days of playing with someone else were now
over . I decided on a Yamaha NP 30 , as I saw a player demonstrate one
on QVC and I was entranced as she played Bach with ease . It sits proudly
in my bedroom at the moment , but I find I just want to try and play by ear.

I have tried some online programs ( inc yours ) and I find having to go to
pc to scroll etc is annoying . I bought myself a beginners course book Vol
one , but I still struggle . I think my fingers move ok ( due to years of guitar
playing I suppose ) but piano is a different discipline altogether . On
guitar , I could learn chord structures , and I wish I could just do the
same for piano .

However , the piano I feel , is more rewarding , as the  tune can be heard far more clearly ,

( plus it never needs tuned ) but I keep getting an inclination to bend or slide a note ,

which I cannot do . I  will persevere with it , as my passion for music will always be with me . At
the moment I am trying to learn the first part of " Fur Elise " . There are
videos of players teaching this on You Tube . I'm sure I'll end up watching
them slowly and learning from them . I know that's the wrong way to learn ,
but it worked for years on guitar , and these habits are hard to break .
Feel free to write back, Andy Cullen

Reply/ Hi Andy

I enjoyed reading your email.

There is nothing wrong with learning to play a
piece of music by watching videos on YouTube...

If you find this the easiest way to learn, then why not?

Learning piano should be fun, not a rigorous task.

Your experience of playing the guitar should help you
pick up things much quicker on the piano.

I wish you the best of luck.

Yours pianistically,
Graham Howard

Hello I am very happy that I can play piano and no, I do not think that the age is important. I always dreamt to play piano but because life is full of suprprises bad or good and you do not have time to do what you like I decided that this year I will change this so I want to play piano and I realy like. Thank you very much for your courses is really helping me and about the notes alphatecaly notes I knew allready so I can wait the next lesson.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!

Hi Graham,

I like very much your free lessons. I found in these lessons tips and hints that I could not find in the books or other courses.
I use the free lessons just to set myself in a better position in taking the courses. Because of your free lessons, I feel much
more motivated and encouraged learning the piano. I have the strange feeling that I can not fail in this adventure. We stick
with your web page to get the piano news.

The piano progress is excellent, I spend the time studying the Rocket Piano course, there are many theoretical aspects to be
understood and fixed before any practice. I can not believe that in about 4 weeks I started to read music, to understand it.
At this time I practice with the fingers on the table, the piano is ordered but it did not arrived yet. I feel progress from
one day to another, it is a fantastic activity, I feel much younger. The tips and hints from your free lessons offered me the
frame on which I can advance with the course, the Rocket Piano has been reccomended by you and is indeed the best course

available to me.

My interest in piano is driven mainly by my 4 yrs daughter, I try to prepare her for september when she will take a piano course
in a music school. I will take care that my daughter will practice every day about 15-30 mins., she will have to take two courses,
one at home with me and another at school. Anyways, my wife shows also strong interest for piano playing, I think we already

have a great time doing this activity all toghether.

You have the best piano web page, there is no equal to it, for about 3 months I am searching intensively on the piano subject

and there is nothing that could really attract me.

Thanks for what you do for us and I wish you best success.

Adrian
