Questions
Hi Graham
Thank you so much for the free lessons that you have sent to me. They have been of great value. I have an upright piano and I am practicing every day for 15 - 20 minutes at the minimum.
I have found my left hand difficult to play notes while my right hand plays I think that I will get the hand of it.
again many thanks for your help.
kind regards
Hilary
Reply/ You have the Left hand blues!
I think EVERYONE is in the same boat when they are learning. I can remember having this problem when I was learning piano too – it was even worse for me though. I had been playing the trumpet for many years before I started to get serious about the piano and when I started taking lessons I found that playing the right hand was 1000 times easier than coordinating the left.
I practiced every day and made sure I played lots of scales with the left hand so I could bring it up to the speed and control of the right hand. The scales really made a HUGE difference.
15-20 minutes a day is excellent. If you can keep this up for a few more months you should see that left hand working much better.
Let me know if you need some more tips.

Hello Graham,
Let me first thank you for the free lessons, I just need to tell you a little about myself, I started playing piano at the age of four,(I am now 62) and my Mother sent me to piano lessons for two years at the age of ten, my piano teacher told my Mother he could teach me nothing as I was not reading music but interpreting my own version of music. I could play quite fluently by ear, so for the next few years just amused myself trying to imitate Liberace Fats Waller Winifred Atwell, etc., trying to always to find my own style of playing. I was married at an early age, and the piano was forgotten, my husband always promised me one, but the nearest that I got was an electric organ, not quite the same thing :o) It is our 30th wedding anniversary next month, and I have just had my new piaono delivered, a wonderful Weber. I realise that if I am to accomplish anything I need to learn again. I can still play by ear most anything in the keys of C G & F but I am lacking in scales and speed, I remember the basics of music but to be honest at my time of life would just like to learn chord progressions skills, and style, maybe learn to play in other keys, I have a real passion for R & B, but also like some of the classical music. Which way would you suggest that I could now progress forward. I do have a genuine ear and love for music. Thanks for all your help Best regards Brenda Houlihan.
Answer/ Hi Brenda It seems you have a talent for playing by ear which you developed at an early age. This is the road I would go down if I were you. Maybe you can find a local piano teacher that has good knowledge of music theory. He/she can help you with chord progressions and also to develop your talent. There is also a very good online course written by my friend Jermaine Griggs of Hear and Play. He teaches you how to play any piece of music by ear.
You might consider buying his course BEFORE you approach a teacher -- it will save you the expensive cost of piano lessons.

Question/ Hello, my name is Anderson, I'm 27 years old and I've always loved piano but I have never had an opportunity to learn this wonderful instrument.
Now I want to start studying Piano and I found in your webpage a school address in Enfield, near me Walthamstow, but I have lots of questions and I would love if you can help me a bit.
Is the keyboard good enough and if I learn in a piano can I play in a keyboard or vice-verse?
Is it better to start the course before to buy anything or you should have your own "keyboard" or "piano" before start the classes?
On your webpage we can find all sorts of instruments (keyboard, digital piano, grand piano and loads of brands) and I would like to know what is the best that I can get for me, as I don't know anything about that, I'm a total beginner and I can only affort to spend around £300? Please can you help me?
Anderson
Reply/ Hi Anderson
I recommend you start learning on a piano, not a keyboard. The keyboard's keys are way too light and if you do your practicing on a keyboard it will be difficult for you to play the piano at a later date.
You needn't buy a piano right away. UK Pianos offer a 'rent to buy' option on most of the pianos they have on display in the showroom. Just go to our shop at 83 Southbury Road Enfield and take a look. You can choose from upright, grand or digital pianos. Anyone of these will be fine.
In answer to your question about whether you should get an instrument before you have lessons so you have something to practice on. Don't worry about this too much when you are just starting. The important thing is to see how you get on first before deciding on renting or buying an instrument.

P.S. Why not take a look at my free piano lessons before you travel down to the Music School?
