A beacon of light in the “Digital” maze

As non playing parents, hunting for the perfect “First” digital piano for our daughter has been daunting.

You don’t want to purchase a £1000 piano that’s going to end up as a nice piece of furniture because our
little angel doesn’t want to learn anymore, but then again, you don’t want to buy a cheap bit of tat that
will turn her off music for life. How to judge the touch of one piano against another, the tone, the value…

And to be honest when we’ve gone to piano shops, do we leave any the wiser? Truth is, we leave with the
knowledge of which one the sale person would like us to buy! Finding the “UK Pianos” site has been a god
send, “Digital Piano Guide” and “Howard Score” plus email communications with Graham has certainly help
us to narrow down the field to a couple of instruments.

We have no hesitation in recommending UK Pianos to all

When I decided that a digital piano would be a nice thing to have I was not ready for the confusion that awaited me – so many pianos and so many mostly incomprehensible features.

Fortunately I discovered Graham Howard’s guide early on and this narrowed my choice with its balanced approach focusing me on the things that really mattered; the most refreshing aspects of the guide are that (despite Mr Howard having a shop that sells pianos) there is no attempt to either persuade the reader that spending lots of money is the only way to go or that you should only buy from UK Pianos. I also emailed him with my questions and got very clear and helpful replies – again with no fluff or sales patter.

Having decided on either a Classenti CDP1 or 2  I visited the UK Pianos showroom where Mr Howard asked a couple of questions and established that for our purposes the CDP1 would be the best choice unless we actually preferred the different sound of the CDP2 – again no attempt to sell us a more expensive piano with characteristics beyond our needs (and uk pianos).

The other staff there were very helpful in sorting out the rest of the transaction and it was encouraging to see how enthusiastic they are about the products.

This is to thank you for all the help I have received to enable me to choose a suitable digital piano.  I have been grateful for the knowledge of Mr Graham Howard at UK Pianos, but not just knowledge but the work involved in writing a manual discussing the various points to consider before spending hundreds of pounds.  When I considered buying a digital piano I had no idea where to turn for information about what a digital piano is or what it does or what to expect for the price I was willing to pay, small or large.  So I was delighted to come across UK Pianos and to find so much help and guidance.  I could have spent so much money on something which was not suitable for my needs.  I have been spared that.  The Howard scores are really something, particularly when alongside prices asked for models, and it is obvious from the reviews of so many, that Mr Howard has given confidence to buy and satisfaction in use, from very many grateful clients.  We would not have had a clue where to start but for Mr Howard’s help, and his patience when we are sometimes very dull (I still don’t know really what polyphony is all about, my fault not his).  I am so glad that I discovered UK Pianos some time ago now and to find that customer service is second to none.  I have not found any other site that compares.

Thanks for all the information.  Your web site is certainly the best and most informative source for piano information that I have found.  I would love to buy a piano from you at UK Pianos, but, although we come to the UK often, we live in Oregon, USA, so it’s not really feasible.

I read you entire Digital Piano Bible and found it tremendously valuable.  I started out knowing essentially nothing about digital pianos and now feel that I can at least understand the specs and carry on a decent conversation with piano salespeople.

Your Howard Score and other ratings were indispensable in helping us pick a piano.  We narrowed the choices down to the Yamaha CLP430, the Roland HP503 or going up a level to the CLP440 or the HP505. After playing these pianos and a few others we bought a Yamaha CLP430 for our daughter and a CLP440 for us. We are all extremely happy with our choices. A comprehensive service in an area where it is difficult to access clear information about a specific type of piano and purchase schemes

The internet offers so much information both positive and negative about different dealers and providers of pianos with so may different prices your head may begin to spin!.

I chose UK pianos, regardless of some negative reviews on the internet – the positive far outweighed the negative. The rent to buy scheme suited me very well and seemed a
good deal and gave me instant access to a piano. When phoning UK pianos they were very helpful.

All in all up to this point in time my experience of UK pianos has been excellent.

I have found your guide and the advice given on the website, Q&As etc absolutely invaluable.

When I first decided to go for a digital piano I didn’t have any idea what to look for and your guide was excellent in helping to figure out what would be best for me.

In the end I decided to go a for a second hand somewhat old Yamaha Clavinova which was very cheap as came via a friend of a friend, but the key thing for me was knowing exactly
all the pros and cons of doing that and having the confidence that it would feel like and behave very much a real piano.

Like many people I learned to play as a child and have always missed having one around as an adult .

If I find I am able to put the time and effort into playing rather than just having a tinkle every so often I can always upgrade to a better one. But I really can’t thank you
enough for your genuinely helpful and impartial advice. Had I lived in London I would most certainly have bought one from UK Pianos as it is rare to find such a helpful person

“Really useful website for getting information about digital pianos”

I bought my digital piano almost 3 years ago. I started to search information about it on the web, as I was totally amateur in it. The most useful information was found on UKPIANOS website. There was gathered the information clearly about the important and useless knowledge of the digital pianos. Additionally brands and types were scored from different points of view, that helps me to reduce the amount of brands and types without hearing any of them. Only after it I started to check pyhsically the pianos.
In a few words, this website is really useful for the people, who would like to buy digital piano. I can offer it to anyone who has knowledge or does not have knowledge about them.

Having had little experience of digital pianos – and what I had had left me with the impression that digital cannot compete with ‘proper pianos’ –

I discovered the Graham Howard web-site via a Google search and found his advice and comments most useful. I was thus armed with the right vocabulary when I went to a local store to find a a suitable instrument to use with a choir I accompany when we give concerts in venues with no piano; I am spoiled by a good grand piano in our rehearsal room.

The result was that I knew what to say and was directed and given free rein in the store to try appropriate digital pianos without the ‘gizmos’.
I did not want and succeeded in finding a Yamaha that fitted my requirements. – it even has a sostenuto pedal like most grand pianos.

Because I knew what technical terms to use, I was accorded the relevant respect in the store and the outcome was more than could have been anticipated – I was offered a decent discount and a stool and travel-case was thrown in with the deal.

So thank you Graham Howard – your web-site was so helpful and even though I did not eventually buy from you, your advice was freely available”.

My experience of UK Pianos has been positive in helping to choose a digital piano.  Customer service is second to none thanks to a certain gentleman by name of Graham who is very knowledgeable about these instruments and advising customers the pros and cons of a large variety which I believe he must have tested to be able to be so specific on their good points as well as their weak points.  All this is of very great help to anyone who knows nothing about them but their face value.  His comprehensive printed information, for those who want it, ensures that customers know just what they can expect from a particular model within the limits of their budget.   So customer service from UK pianos is second to none.

I first came across Graham Howard and UK Pianos in 2010 when looking to purchase an “electronic piano”.  I knew very little about digital pianos and spotted a small advert on the web offering to tell me “what I needed to know about purchasing a digital piano”. The web sites I had visited, before offering any advice, other than sales spiel, such as the varnish used on the cabinet or the wonderful “all round sound” from speakers the size of Dust carts,  wanted to know your age, sex, grannies maiden name and so, and still nothing about what to look for when buying. I rang the number and spoke to Graham about the ad. Almost before I could say yes, the booklet was on my computer. I read, absorbed and then questioned some of the finer points made in the booklet by the author (Graham).  The advice made sense to the “novice  buyer” by which time I had made my mind up to purchase a piano through Graham.  I rang again and my opening line was I wish to purchase a….. “No, I can’t do that” and He proceeded to explain why not. I interjected, “but you recently shipped a piano to Bulgaria”, the answer was still NO.
For my sins, I live in Tenerife, and whereas in UK most large towns have a music shop we don’t have many large towns, nor do we have many musical instrument shops.  OK we have Cortes Ingles with a musical department, but they also sell ladies underwear and bone china.  After searching the web, yellow pages and the Telephone directory I came across a small instrument shop in La Laguna. On arrival at their door I was welcomed to try the range of pianos in their crowded showroom.  For two hours I “tinkled the ivories”, putting into practise the tips from the booklet with my wife providing a commentary on the quality of tone and general sound.  In the past I had played Roland and Yamaha digital pianos without really exploring the option I had under my fingers. I played the Kawai CA18 for perhaps a total of one out of the two hours and decided this was the piano for me.  The bright yet mellow tone, sensitive Touch (three levels), (reminded me of the Baby Grand I had left with my daughter in England)  and a range of other instruments which sounded like the real thing not electronic imitations.  Before buying, I again rang Graham for his opinion on the Kawai, “good pianos, rising reputation, perhaps not the very top of the manufacturers, but reliable electronics” were points included in his reply. I have not been disappointed by my choice.
Having played piano and organ for more than 60 years, the thing that struck be about Graham Howard was his passion about pianos, his knowledge about the construction and qualities of the instruments and his honesty.  Turning down the sale of an upper mid range piano was a shock, but impressive.  We have kept in touch ever since, I commend Graham and UK pianos to anyone wishing to purchase a digital piano, be it for themselves or their children, you will find he will listen, consider and provide an honest assessment of your requirements, whether you like what you hear, is down to you, he is a true professional.

“I bought a Yamaha Arius YDP 161 from Gear4music. I am delighted with the piano and also with the service I received from Gear4music. I also bought a piano stool from them. They initially promised delivery on Tuesday 2nd November but on the Sunday before I received an email saying delivery was delayed. I phoned them at 9.00am Monday morning to be told they were out of piano stools but had the piano. They offered to split the order and dispatch the piano that morning. It arrived Tuesday morning. In the evening an ex music teacher  friend visited who tried the piano and thought it was excellent with a beautiful tone. The piano stool arrived on the Thursday morning.

“We have ended up with a Yamaha Arius YDP141 – Looks weren’t crucial as it’s living upstairs but the overall look and feel is very good we chose the dark rosewood.  It doesn’t have as many ‘gadget’ features  has a much better piano feel to it – the children have their lessons on a baby grand and it compares favourably for a medium priced instrument.  Gear4music customer service is A1!”

Online musical instrument retailer Thomann Cyberstore was named European Online Retailer Of The Year at the 2011 Global E-Commerce Summit in Barcelona last week.

The German company was given the Gold Award at a ceremony on May the 24th at the Spanish city’s Casa Llotja de Mar venue. The judging panel was made up of a number of experts from the e-commerce and online retailing sectors.

The other websites that missed out on the honours were: Marks & Spencer (UK), Bol.com (Netherlands) and Pixmania (France).

Hi Graham,

I’ve decided to buy a Kawai CN-23M digital piano having read
your article and tried it out in store. You recommend Cyberstore Thommen and
I’ve looked on their website and the price is £100 less than UK website stores.
Reading their warranty information they say that the piano is my responsibility
and not theirs, as soon as it leaves their premises. This is worrying and also
the guarantee does not specify that any repairs will be carried out in the
home. It does say that any faults after the first year require the piano to be
sent back to them in Germany. Can you quantify this please, as you say they
have excellent after sales service.

Thomann’s after sales service is first class.
They are the leaders in the industry.

The reliability of Kawai is good as well. It
is unlikely a problem would occur.

But…

If a problem does occur then Thomann will certainly
look after you.

You get a 3 year warranty with Thomann. They
will usually sort out the problem in your home,
or arrange for a pick up and drop off of a
new piano.

You wouldn’t be expected to send a digital piano
back to Germany!

Firstly, than you for continuing to contact me in connection with my proposed purchase. Can I say, i was extremely impressed with your site and your extremely helpful piano guide. I was certainly open to you assisting me with my purchase and got a real sense of trust.

I guess we just felt that everything out there was more expensive than we believe it should be. Not only that, as we are both fairly visually literate types, we were wanting our cake and wished to eat it.

We decided to ask a friend from my days in the music business, Paul Wishart. As a player and technologist, Paul has been on the cutting edge of various music technology initiatives including Q Base, MIX Man etc.

Paul suggested we had a look at Thomann. We had a look at the site and over a 24hr period pretty much convinced ourselves that we had the spec we needed at a price and look we were happy with.

I have to say, after comparing the spec against the branded electric pianos and the second hand pianos, I believe the Thomann DP 50 BP Set for under £500, was a perfect choice from my daughter. On top of that, coming in black gloss, it is a lovely looking machine.

Their website and the ease in which you can order, track etc was impressive too.

After reading your extremely useful guide, I’ve decided to go for a Kawai CL36 as I needed a compact size. It seems buying it from Thomann Cybestore is the cheapest option but was wondering if you has any experience of buying from them? Do the pianos come with a UK plug? Would I have to cover the cost of shipping if any repairs were required (website seems to suggest I might)?
I’d be grateful for any advice you had.

I’ve been recommending Thomann for over 3 years
now. From what I’ve seen they offer a good
service.

The pianos come with a European plug. You just
need to get an adaptor from Argos. They cost
about £3 or £4, I think.

If the piano needs a repair under the warranty
then it’s Thomann’s duty to cover all shipping
charges.

Hi Graham,

On your website, you have mentioned that Thomann (Germany) is a good place to buy the piano and that they provide after sales repair (during warranty) at the site within UK.

I had written to them about their after sales service, and they have replied saying that they themselves do not have any setup within UK to repair the piano at site. However, they have contacts in UK who could help us if such warranty repair is required. Further, if we want Thomann to carry out the repair, then they can get the piano shipped back to their base in Germany for carrying out repairs if required. Obviously there will be cost element attached to either of these options I believe.

Though their price is tempting, I am in dilemma about ordering the piano from Thomann in Germany especially about the delivery and warranty related after sales service within UK.

From your own experience and that of the audience who interact with you, it would be most helpful if you can advice us about the reliability of Thomann’s after sales and delivery services within UK.

I’ve not hard any negative feedback about after sales
service with Thomann…

They should and would pay for a technician to fix your
piano. If they can’t arrange it (I suppose it might
depend on where you live) then they would pay for
any expenses you incur to have it fixed.

Most piano shops either have a digital piano technician
on-site or know of one that could help you.

I don’t see any of this being an issue.

Thomann Cyberstore offer a really excellent after sales
service. And I’ve seen many customer testimonials to
back this up.

I truly can endorse Thomann Musicstore in Germany. Be sure to select your native language! Folks are friendly, reply to your e-mail within a day, are knowledgeable and have ample stock. During the process of buying the digital piano, I changed my mind and ordered another type, which was no problem at all.

When phoning Thomann, you can be sure to get somebody who speaks your language (German, English, Dutch and so on) which is a relief since not all musical terms or expressions are known to me in either English or German.

Shipment is standard 8 euros and is done by a local freighter. I mean, if I drive to the next big city in my neighbourhood, I’d spend more on gas and probably have to rent a car to haul the pretty big box back home. Due to Christmas time, it took a little bit longer than expected but still very reasonable: something like a week.

Hi Graham,

Your book was brilliant in enabling me to define what was important and what was not, in buying a digital piano. It was fantastic to see Play something Music Shops listed at the end as well. We have lived in Sawbridgeworth for several years and did not know of the existence of this shop so nearby in Bishop’s Stortford (we were resigned to going to Cambridge originally). Your recommendation was spot on because the person in the shop was very helpful and their prices were the same as those on the internet (Gear4Music).

We went for a Roland RP-301 in the end – not your absolute top recommendation but somewhere near the top. It had all the important features, a simple design (few buttons), and was a middle price. We also liked the tone. We pick it up this w/e, hopefully, and my daughter is really excited to play it.

Thank-you Graham. I have several friends who have kids taking up the piano – I will definitely recommend your book to them.

They are a reputable, trustworthy store. In fact,
they have a Yamaha ‘Homeworld’ store in addition
to their main store.
