“Out of the models I looked at (incl Roland and Casio at £1000) the touch most closely resembled that of a real piano”
I finally got round to buying my piano! The main reason it took me so long to get one was money issues – I was looking for a decent model in the price bracket of around £1000 and took me a while to save up.
I bought a Kawai ES6 from Biggars Music in Glasgow. I was looking for a stage piano that I could take to rehearsals/gigs so weight and size was a big factor. I shopped around Edinburgh/Glasgow and found a number of good digital pianos however I really liked the feel and touch of the Kawai ES6 and out of the models I looked at (incl Roland and Casio ~£1000) the touch most closely resembled that of a real piano, full 88-keys and good weighting. It also has sufficient midi inputs/outputs and USB connection that will come in handy when I get round to buying Cubase software and experimenting in digital music. For around £1,050, Biggars also threw in a detachable keyboard music stand, sustain pedal and music stand so I think I got a pretty good deal!
I’ve also bought a Roland KC-150 keyboard amp (£250), as although the speakers are pretty good, greater volume is needed for playing with a band. Since I bought the digital piano in June, I’ve joined a blues band and we’re playing covers including Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and Ruth Brown, which have great piano parts!

“The ES6 is fantastic- the action is one of the better that I tried”
I bought the Kawai ES6 after looking at the Yamaha P155 and the Roland FP7 and Casio Privia series.
The ES6 has all of the things I was looking for- portability, weighted keys, realistic piano sounds
and on board speakers. The ES6 is fantastic- the action is one of the better that I tried- it is
slightly heavier than the Yamaha and the Roland and has more of an acoustic piano feel.
The piano sounds are excellent and the mellowness of the Kawai I really like- although the tone can
be adjusted to make it more bright if desired and the keyboard action can be adjusted to have a
lighter touch.
The speaker arrangement of 6 across the board easily fills up the room I have it inAll in all the
Kawai ES6 is excellent digital piano and I an really happy with it.

“The Kawai ES6 has a very small sound like playing the radio in a biscuit tin”
I tried the Kawai ES6 for over an hour in a shop selling exclusively Kawai Piano’s.
The salesman seemed to think Kawai was the best brand ever trouncing everyone
else. I must admit I was initially disappointed with the look as it was very cheap
looking. It had the look of GCSE electronics projects where you vacuum form a
plastic skin just to protect the electronics. But I was hopeful for the sound.
Here too I was disappointed, the speakers were poor and just didn’t make a nice
sound at all, very small sound like playing the radio in a biscuit tin. I wondered if
perhaps that was all small speakers were capable of. The action seemed rather
binary as did the level of sensitivity to my key presses, I could either hammer the
key down for loud or press lightly for a normal sound, but I don’t think you could
call it expressive.
The one thing I will say for the Kawai ES6 is it did sound similar to their upright
pianos, but I didn’t like them either. Overall rather disappointed with it and was
hoping there were better offerings.

“I didn’t like the feel – It felt quite soft”
I was going to buy the Kawai ES6 but upon playing it, while it sounds nice (especially the piano and strings combo) I didn’t like the feel.
It felt quite “soft”, I’m not sure how else to describe it… there wasn’t effort required to press the keys down… a lack of inertia I guess.
