The most important thing to know when buying a used upright piano is the condition of the piano’s inside. It doesn’t matter how good the outside cabinet looks; the value of any used upright piano depends mostly on the parts.
Signs of a second hand piano in good condition are: hammers clean and not worn, tuning pins not rusty, and notes sounding in tune. It’s best to get a professional piano tuner’s advice before purchasing a used upright piano, or come to our Enfield, North London or Northamptonshire Piano Shops to talk with our piano specialist.
Questions
“Acoustic Piano Recommendation”
Hi,
I’m just writing following checking your website.
My son is age 6 and started to have piano lessons (3 lessons so far). Are you able to recommend any good acoustic pianos, and advise if you have any in-stock to ship out for delivery?
We are based in Rochester, Kent.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards
Hi Jay
We have a good selection at the moment.
Delivery is usually within a week.
Three pianos I recommend in particular for your son
to learn and progress on up to the higher levels are:
Legnica
£1595
£40 per month
Calisia
£1695
£42 per month
Baldwin
£1695
£42 per month
The Legnica has the warmest, most mellow tone.
The Calisia and Legnica are both made in Poland.
There’s little to choose between them other than
that the Calisia has a clearer, more resonant tone.
The Baldwin is an America made piano and has a clear,
natural tone with excellent key repetition.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Kind regards
Graham Howard

Graham,
My guitarist son has been looking for a real piano for some time having gained experience with digital keyboards doing lots of home recording.
Out of the blue I have spotted a Young Chang Console piano in a local charity shop and we’ve already had a close look inside and a play. I would say its 90’s vintage but external finish is in good condition and its really “as new” inside, is pretty much in tune (no dead keys) and has a very pleasant tone. It seems to good to be true at £400 and we’re prepared to pay for specialist movers and a piano tuner once installed.
We’re good at Guitars but pianos are an unknown area to us. I think that 400 isn’t much of a risk for what looks to be a very good instrument, but, I’d appreciate your (no obligation!) expert advice and views.
Thanks and kind regards, Mark
Reply/ Hi Mark
Young Chang make reasonably good pianos. And 20 years
old is really no age for an upright piano.
So, providing it’s in good condition then £400 sounds
like a bargain!

“Upright piano for 7 year old”
I would like an upright for my 7 year old who has been learning for about 2 months now.
Her teacher is fed up over the keyboard we currently have.
making them suitable for learning on and god enough to
striking sound and excellent repetition on the keys.

“Please advise on the best, compact piano you have for my son to learn on”
I’m looking to get a piano for my son and it needs to be compact. I am also worried about disturbing the neighbours. Thanks.
Dear Curtis
There are 3 compact upright pianos I recommend
for your son to learn and progress on:
Giles, Bentley and Eavestaff.
Both the Giles and Bentley are 6-octave pianos.
This means that the number of keys is 76 instead of
the usual 85 or 88.
With these pianos there is no practice pedal though.
This is due mainly to their age.
For something more modern and with a practice pedal
I recommend going for either the Schaefer or Chappell:
Out of all these pianos the Chappell and Schaefer are
the nicest to play.
The main difference between the two is the sound…
The Chappell is a warm, rounded tone whereas the
Schaefer has a brighter, more striking sound.
it all depends on what you prefer really.
Both pianos will take your son up to grade 8 level.
This is the highest grade.
These pianos are also available on the Rent to Own
Programme. You can rent it for a year, and the 12
months rental payments count towards the price.
You can either buy the piano later or change it
for another, if you prefer.
You can also return it after 12 months if your
son doesn’t take to it.
Yours pianistically

Dear Graham,
I came to your shop this week with my daughter to look at some of the rent to buy pianos.
My daughter liked the Legnica piano, although you did mention it needed some retuning I think?
I wanted to check with you some of the details for the piano and the rental agreement. Can you confirm for me all the costs for the rental scheme.
The piano is listed for £42 a month which is inclusive of VAT? Also there is a delivery charge which I wanted to check and is there any other deposit? There is a minimum rental of 1 year – if we decided not to keep the piano we would not pay anything after that?
It was my understanding that then any monthly rental would come off the price of the piano if we buy it during the 12 moths rental. Am I also correct in saying that if we wanted to upgrade to a different piano within your collection we could put the money paid so far towards a more expensive piano?
The piano also comes with a 5year guarantee and I wanted to check what is included within that guarantee?
Thank you for your help,
Hi Zoe
Yes, £42 per month includes VAT.
Delivery is £185 to the ground floor.
The deposit is £319.
This is a security deposit and is refunded to you
at the end of the rental.
If you decide not to keep the piano after 1 year,
then there is nothing more to pay.
The return delivery charge is taken from the deposit.
12 month’s rental payments count towards the price.
You can also use this towards a higher priced piano.
The 5-year guarantee covers all parts and labour.
Yours pianistically

Which piano would you recommend for a beginner?
It needs to be less than 135cm wide.
It is suitable for learning on, as the key touch us neither
too heavy or too light.
This is £1,495 and £40 per month.
Its keys are more sensitive than the Bentley, and the
sound is purer with longer sustain.
