Questions
Hi Graham,
I’ve read your comprehensive guide to buying a digital piano, but I’m
still a little confused and would appreciate some help please!
My son has been learning piano for around 4 years – he hasn’t gone
through the grading system but his piano teacher says he is working at a
grade 7 or 8 level.
He is off to university in the autumn and I’d like to buy him a keyboard
/ piano to take with him, to use in his university room as he loves
playing so much.
I was looking at the Yamaha P45 – but that would appear to be more for a
beginner… So next I looked at the Casio PX-S1000… What would you
recommend please? I feel that it will need to last him quite a while as
he is unlikely to have space for a “proper” piano wherever he lives for
quite some years.
I am on a budget and would like to bring it in below £500.
Many thanks, Sarah
Reply/ Hi Sarah
Both the Yamaha P45 and Casio PX-S1000 have only
weighted keys.
I don’t recommend either of these for anything
above grade 5 level.
I recommend for your son the Broadway ab1
The AB1 has fully-weighted, touch sensitive keys
that have a nice, firm feel with good response.
It feels close to playing a real piano.
Another advantage is its large speakers (2 x 15 watts) –
Almost twice the wattage of the Casio and more than
twice the wattage of the equivalent Yamaha, and Roland.
I’m not talking about the power output here
(although it’s got plenty of that if you ever need it)…
The large speakers give it a warm tone that sounds natural
(not electronic sounding like most other cheap digital pianos).
Yours pianistically
Graham Howard
