Description
If you’re piano teacher has advised getting a Yamaha then this piano will get you started.
The YDP145 looks really nice, and the tone quality is authentic.
However, it is only a really basic piano that has limitations in expression and key response.
The YDP145 is recommend only up to grade 4 level. So you’d have to upgrade it to something
better in only a few years.
It’s small speakers (only 2 x 6 watts) really limit the volume output making it sound quite
muffled and subdued.
If you want something you can keep for many years more without needing to upgrade then
take a look at the Broadway EZ-102 or BW1 models. These offer a lot more for your money.

Questions
Good morning Graham,
I bought a Yamaha YDP 142 from you on 03 September 2014.
I believe the current model is Yamaha YDP145.
I am looking into a possible piano upgrade to suit our purpose. The primary users are my grandchildren age 9 and 12 who have signed on to take the ABRSM grade 2 and grade 4.
My questions as follows:
1. What’s are our options?
I will like to rely on your professional recommendation on the next brand and model for the upgrade. Personally we are most comfortable with a renown brand like Yamaha.
2. Trade In /Part Exchange
We will have to trade in our current piano Yamaha YDP 142 as part exchange.
What other information would you need of the current piano?
Our post code is London SE22 9JZ and this is a No pets No smoking household. The piano is used for an average of 20 mins daily and place in the living room away from other family activities.
The house is compact and the next piano has to be about the same size.
Best regards
Reply/ Hi Connie
Thank you for coming back to us.
I would like to recommend for you one of the German made
Gewa digital pianos.
You can see the range here
A step up from the Yamaha would be the Gewa DP340 and
UP365 models.
These are equivalent in quality to the Yamaha Clavinova
CLP735 and CLP745, but cost less in price.
These have been sampled on a Steinway grand piano,
so you get a full, warm and natural piano tone throughout
the piano’s range.
The key touch on both the DP340 and UP365 are very sensitive
making them capable of performing any piece of music no matter
how difficult and technical.
We can also offer you part-exchange for your YDP142
assuming it is all in working order.
Kind regards
Graham Howard

“Broadway or Yamaha?”
Dear Graham,
We have been playing digital piano Broadway B1 for 12 years already. My son is doing ABRSM grade 8 and daughter grade 6.
My son wants to have different piano more close to acoustic one. I am between the Broadway B3 and Yamaha YDP 145 digital pianos. Which one would you recommend, please.
Reply/ Hi Feruza
The Broadway B3 is discontinued.
Broadway BW1 is the latest model.
The Yamaha YDP145 is only a basic piano…
Its key touch is only medium-weighted and
not heavy enough to resemble the feel of
an upright or grand piano…
The YDP145 has 3 only levels of touch sensitivity.
That means you can only play 3 dynamic levels
(soft, medium and loud). Or in musical terms:
p, mf and f.
What’s more, the speakers on the YDP145 are
very small (only 2 x 6 watts). This gives it
a thin, tinny sound.
But, on the other hand, it is a Yamaha. So you
do get a very well built piano that has a good
name and is pretty reliable most of the time.
The Broadway BW1 would be a better choice.
And this is the one I recommend for both your
son and daughter.
With the BW1 you get a cleaner, more resonant
sound. This is because of the superior sound
sampling, the larger speakers (2 x 15 watts),
and the position of the speakers.
But the most important aspect of the Broadway
BW1 is the fully-weighted touch…
They will enjoy playing the Broadway so much more
because it feels closer to playing a real piano.
And the 4 levels of touch sensitivity (the Yamaha
YDP145 has only 3 levels) allow you to play over
a wider range of dynamics. This is really
important for an intermediate to advanced level.
The Broadway BW1 is recommended for grade 8 level.
The Yamaha YDP145 is only suitable for beginners
up to grade 5, possibly 6.

Do you have any feedback on the Yamaha KDP 145 you can share?
Reply/ Dear Robert
The Yamaha YDP145 (or its predecessor the
YDP144) is often a digital piano that teachers
suggest, because Yamaha is the brand name
they know.

beginning, in-between, or up to grade 6 or 7 level.
The Yamaha YDP145 is recommend for beginners
up to grade 4 or possibly 5.

My son has started piano lessons and we are now looking at a sensible way to purchase a piano for him so we can support his passion.
The rent to buy scheme would really be ideal for us. I am looking at the Broadway EZ-102 but his piano teacher has suggested we get a Yamaha Arius YDP 145 I haven’t been able to find this available to buy on a rental purchase scheme so I was wondering if you could tell me what the difference is between the two?
Could I have a price for the Broadway with a adjustable stool, headphones and pedals etc?
Many Thanks for your help
Kind Regards,
