“Cheaper YDP162 or recommended HP503?”
Dear Graham
Thank you for your helpful guide. We are stuck between a Yamaha YDP 162 and whether it worth getting a slightly more expensive one (as a friend has, not sure of model number) or the Roland HP503 (as recommended and also seen ).
Our 7 year old has just started keyboard and obviously it’s not clear how far he will progress over the years. I used to play the piano up to grade 5 level as a teenager and my husband is keen for me to restart! I help my other son with his violin in a very basic tuning way.
We probably don’t need to spend masses and masses however I can’t but help think we need a few more gadgets, although my husband rightfully says they could distract our son from practising! Also we have been told that the Roland HP503 has more superior tone and simulated piano string option, but how important are these elements for us?
Any advice regarding these models would be most welcome.
Many thanks.
Reply/ Hi Katie
The YDP162 would be OK for now.
But if your son progresses to a high level, then
you’d need to change it for something with
more dynamic levels and a superior key touch.
The Roland HP503 would take him much further.
It is recommended right up to the highest piano
grade.
Seeing as you reached a good standard in the past,
you’d prefer the sound of the Roland pianos.
They’re sampled on a Steinway concert grand.
So you get lovely, deep, resonant tones.

Dear Graham,
My Classenti CDP1 has recently stopped working. I am fairly sure it’s to do with the on/off switch. I now have to decide whether to see if it can be repaired or to replace it. The one I have is shiny black and in very good condition.
I have been looking at the second hand pianos on your site. I’m not sure if you have a Classenti available at the moment? I also like the look of the Roland although I do like the smaller size (and price tag of course) of the Classenti. I live in Benfleet in Essex (near Southend-on-Sea). I was wondering, if I purchased a second hand digital piano from you, would you take my digital piano in part exchange and if so would you deliver the one I bought and collect at the same time? How much do you think you might give me and do all your second hand digital pianos come with warranty?
Many thanks.
Reply/ Dear Sarah
If you Classenti CDP1 is not repairable, then it
would only have a ‘parts-only’ value of £50.
Of course, we can part-exchange it for you.
We have a CDP1 in black satin available, all working
and fully-checked.
It also comes with a one year warranty.
You can see it here
The second hand Roland HP503 we have is very nice…
it has a warm, resonant tone, and is in fact a lot nicer
to play than any of the modern Rolands, which seem
to have gone downhill since they moved their
production to Indonesia.
We can deliver and collect at the same time.
Let me know if you are interested in either of these.
Yours pianistically
Graham Howard
