“The keyboard on the Roland RD700NX was superior”
I ended up going for the Roland RD700nx. As this is my second digital piano (I’m upgrading an original RD300 which must be nearly 20 years old now and has done me incredibly well), I was keen to get hands-on experience before buying and was pleased to find that pmt in Romford has a good number of the models I was interested on show.
The keyboard on the 700nx was easily superior to the 300nx, though comparable with the FP7-F which was very limited in functionality compared with the 700nx and, whilst I’ll probably never use a lot of the functions in the 700nx, I didn’t want to regret not having them a few years down the line. I was however impressed with the internal speakers on the FP7-F which definitely gave the piano the kind of key resonance you get on an acoustic piano.
If you know you only want piano sounds and a limited set of other capabilities then the FP7-F is definitely the one to go for; if you want a broader set of sounds and more controllability then it’s the RD700nx; if you less concerned about touch but want a reasonably broad set of sounds / functions then maybe the 300nx would suffice, but I suspect that any “real” piano player would greatly prefer either of the other two keyboards.
