Pianos to compare with Yamaha YDP-S31:
Broadway B1
Roland RP501R
Description
The most basic Yamaha piano you can buy. It’s really a cut down version of the YDP141 with a cheaper keyboard action. The sound is reasonable, but the keys are too springy resulting in a false feel. Recommended for beginners on a tight budget that want the Yamaha name, and warranty behind them.
The Yamaha YDP-S31 Arius Digital Piano was created for the digital home, and provides piano playing enjoyment for all skill levels and expands the YDP line with a completely new slimmed-down design.
The YDP-S31 delivers a traditional acoustic piano playing experience with the modern benefits of digital audio, including permanent tuning stability, the ability to practice privately via headphones and a choice of six instrument Voices. Exclusive to Yamaha is the way this gets achieved with AWM stereo piano Voices, 88 Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) weighted keys and a built-in 3-pedal frame featuring the Half Damper Effect, which fluidly captures foot motion while pedaling. Other convenient features include a built-in metronome, song recorder and 50 recordings of standard piano repertoire that can be used for simple listening enjoyment or as an ideal practice tool for both beginner and advanced pianists.
The YDPS31 represents a new look and feel for Yamaha console digital pianos, from its Rosewood-finish stand, pedal frame and Soft-Shut key cover to its intuitive operation, it easily stands apart from other digital pianos in the marketplace. And even at its competitive low price point, it wouldn’t be a YDP without Yamaha’s trademark piano touch and tone.
Yamaha is the only digital piano manufacturer with a heritage of making acoustic pianos for over a century. In addition to durable, high-quality pedals, AWM Stereo Sampled piano Voices, a built-in stand and natural rosewood finish on the sides and top panel, the YDP-S31’s Soft-Shut key cover acts as a music stand when opened and provides gentle resistance when closing to keep it from slamming shut. It creates a completely flat surface, end-to-end, when closed, contributing to the model’s sleek appearance
88 note graded hammer action, 6x sounds, 64 note polyphonic, layer function, reverb, 1-track song recorder, metronome, transpose, 3x pedals, 2x headphone jacks, MIDI in/out, 2x 6watts speaker system. Dimensions: 1390 x 299 x 982mm. weight 36 kg, Colour: Rosewood.

Hi Graham Howard
I bought a Yamaha YDPS31. I am very satisfied with it, except for the thumping key action when the volume is at a certain level. I bought the piano because of
its affordability. The piano action is pretty close to that of an acoustic piano and the piano sounds are very good. I feel very comfortable with this piano and I feel that it makes me play better because of its nice response and expressiveness. It’s perfect for Classical, Jazz, and Rock.
I would recommend this piano.
